- TGI carried out a detailed exploration activities including
drilling in the northern coast of AP for over two years
which has resulted in proving potential heavy mineral
deposits in Srikakulam district.
- TGI has secured a mining lease for about 235 acres corresponding
to a coastal length of 11.5 kms between Nagavalli and Vamsadhara
rivers in Srikakulam district and has the distinction of
being the first mining lease for beach sand deposits in
AP.
- The deposit is named after SRIKURMAM, a well known pilgrim
center, being in the central point of the deposits. It is about
14 kms south of Srikakulam town, the district headquarters.
- Unlike the beach sands deposit in Uvari, Tamilnadu, the
Srikurmam deposit is a multi mineral one containing about
18 - 20% of garnet ; 9 -12 % of Ilmenite ; 3 - 6% of Leucoxene
(brown ilmenite); 10% of Sillimanite; 0.4 - 0.5% each of
Rutile and Zircon. The thickness of the sands varies from
5.0 to 10 mm.
- Srikurmam deposit is considered to be one of the best
deposits for garnet and ilmenite in the east coast of India.
- TGI secured all statutory clearances from both central
and state governments.
- WGI Heavy Minerals Inc's futuristic policy has yielded
positive results and TGI has initiated steps to establish
an integrated project in Srikakulam.
